Meet Pappy (my Daddy!). In my teenage years I worked for Dad’s BBQ business where I learned a thing or two about real BBQ in between horse riding at playday Rodeos. Pappy enjoyed his BBQ truck, and cooking every year with his brother Ronnie Hurta and their dad, at the world-renowned Taylor International BBQ Cookoff (competitions). Pappy was Timothy D Hurta and his grandpa name was PAPPY. He loved his grandkids so much that changed his BBQ competition name to ‘Pappy and the Boy’s’ where he and his team won many awards and catered for local golf clubs and private parties. Our whole family is from Taylor, Texas– one of the BBQ capitals of the world and my mom and dad grew up with the Mueller family, owners of the famous at ‘Louis Muller BBQ’ in Taylor, Texas. In my childhood, I remember well the Hurta and Mueller families spending many summers and Christmas Eves together. In Pappy’s retirement, he enjoyed working with the team ‘Louis Muller BBQ’ restaurant.
It all started 3 generations ago in Texas where ‘Po Po’ (my grandpa) worked his way up from 16 years old at Taylor Meat Market right through to partnership until retirement. This is where the barbequing began. His family with ‘Bohemian’ German, Czech descent, coming to Texas as a child joined the ‘revolution’ as butcher in the towns slaughterhouse and makin’ BBQ.
When Pappy’s went to be with Jesus in 2013, Pappy’s Texas Barbeque (UK) started on the anniversary of his departure in 2014. Pappy helped design our first Pit and was excited to see his family now in the UK getting back to our Texas traditions. So now, the family BBQ tradition lives on with Daddy’s (Pappy’s) little girl!
